Offensive Outburst Powers Choctaws in Series-Opening Win

CLINTON, Miss. --- Mississippi College erupted for six runs in the third inning and never looked back, rolling to a 13-3, run-rule victory over Trevecca Nazarene on Friday, March 21 at Frierson Field in the first-ever meeting between the two programs.

Bryce LaRocca led the Choctaws, who improved to 19-9 on the season and 11-5 in Gulf South Conference, with a dominant performance at the plate, driving in seven runs on a 3-for-4 night, including two home runs. His three-run blast in the fifth inning capped a five-run frame that put the game well out of reach. The two-home run effort lifts the Lake Charles, La., native into the top spot on the team with eight.

JT Vance and Jordan Evans joined LaRocca with multiple-hit performances as both picked up a pair of hits.

The Trojans struck first with a pair of runs in the opening inning, capitalizing on a MC miscue, but the Choctaws responded emphatically in the third. After loading the bases, LaRocca laced a two-run single up the middle, and Korey Cooper followed with an RBI hit to give MC a 3-2 lead. Vance and Logan Shurden added run-scoring hits as part of the six-run outburst.

The Blue and Gold added two more runs in the fourth before LaRocca's three-run homer – his second of the season - in the fifth put an exclamation point on the offensive explosion.

Holland Townes (2-4) went the distance for the Choctaws, allowing just three hits and one earned run over seven innings while striking out five. The complete game is the first of the season for the Ridgeland, Miss., native and the fourth of his career.

Nick Judd (2-3) took the loss for Trevecca Nazarene, giving up six earned runs on seven hits in two innings of work. Brett Dingess paced the Purple and White, collecting two of the team's three hits.

Mississippi College and Trevecca Nazarene renew its series on Saturday, March 22 with a doubleheader. First pitch is 1 p.m.
