Choctaws Rally for Series-Clinching Victory

CLINTON, Miss. --- For the third time this season the Mississippi College baseball team staged a come-from-behind win. They rallied in the eighth to take the series from the University of North Georgia with a 6-4 victory on Sunday, Feb. 9. UNG falters to 3-4 on the season.

MC trailed by a run after seven frames and after retiring the Nighthawks in order in the top of the eighth, set the stage for another late game triumph in the home half of the frame. JT Vance and Bryce Capobianco reached base, forcing an UNG pitching change. One batter later, Korey Cooper laced a ball down the right field line to even the contest at 4-all. The hit was the third of the day from Dickinson, Texas, native on the day.

Two batters later, Logan Shurden delivered the game-winning hit with a single through the right side, scoring Cooper and Banks Hyde, who pinch ran for Capobianco, and placing the Blue and Gold back in front since the fourth inning. Shurden finished the day with a team-best three RBI.

Gabe Garner (1-0) picked up the win on the mound, going 3.2 frames in relief. He struck out two and allowed two runs on three hits in his appearance. Jack Bell (1) nailed down the contest with an inning of relief work as he struck out two.

The two teams stood deadlocked at a run each through the first three innings. The Blue and Gold broke through in the fourth as Tyler Jacobsen and Shurden each recorded an RBI to take the lead 3-1. A pair of home runs in the fifth and sixth placed the Nighthawks in front for the first time of the day, including a two-run homer by Edwin Bowman in the sixth.

Daniel Courtney (0-1) took the loss on the mound as he allowed two runs on two hits in 3.1 innings. He surrendered three walks and struck out two in relief. Jake Prince led UNG with two hits while Bowman drove in two runs.

The series victory is the first for the program since Apr. 13 when the Choctaws took a doubleheader from Christian Brothers University.

Mississippi College returns to action on Monday, Feb. 10 as it hosts Blue Mountain Christian University. First pitch is 2 p.m.
