Choctaws Fall in OT to UAH

Five Choctaws score in double figures

CLINTON, Miss. --- Mississippi College placed five players in double figures, but finished on the short end as the University of Alabama in Huntsville topped the Choctaws (13-10, 9-8 Gulf South Conference) 80-72 in overtime on Saturday, Feb. 8.

Tiara Abron paced the Blue and Gold with 16 points while Tytiana Buckley chimed in 15. Amelia Bell and Alexis Rowe poured in 13 each while Nia Coleman rounded out the quintet with 10 points. Rowe finished two rebounds shy of her third double-double of the season with a team-best eight boards.

MC held a three-point advantage at the intermission, despite trailing by 10 points after the first 10 minutes of play, and were up five points heading into the final quarter of regulation. However, the Argonauts outscored the Blue and Gold 17-12 in the final period of regulation and closed the game out on a 32-19 run to secure the regular-season sweep.

It is the first time the Choctaws have scored 70-plus points and faltered this season and the only two blemishes on the slate to a team from the State of Alabama.

UAH received 20 points from its bench during the 45 minutes of action, outscoring the Blue and Gold by 15 in the category. MC's five bench points came from Vivian Sketoe.

MC maintained a narrow lead much of the fourth quarter, but a Haley Nichols' layup at the 3:25 mark, drew the two teams even at 61. UAH would take its first lead since late in second quarter as Bella White scored in the paint nearly a minute later. The Choctaws responded with four quick points to regain the lead, but a pair of Lili Wilken's free throws sent the contest into overtime. Wilken finished the contest with 36 points.

UAH claimed a five-point advantage early in overtime and reached its largest lead of the extra period, eight points, with under a minute to play. MC pulled within five points as Bell knocked down a 3-pointer, but Wilken drained three of the four final free throws of the game to ice the contest.

MC sits in fifth in the GSC standings following the weekend's action. The top eight teams earn berths to the conference tournament with the top four seeds hosting the lower four seeds on Tuesday, March 4. The four advancing teams punch their tickets to semifinals in Birmingham, Ala. on March 8. The GSC title game is March 9 at 12 p.m.

Mississippi College returns to action on Thursday, Feb. 13 as it travels to Pensacola, Fla., to battle the University of West Florida. Tip-off at the UWF Field House is 5:30 p.m.
