Choctaws Battle; Look to Bounce Back at Valdosta State

PENSACOLA, Fla. --- The Mississippi College women's basketball team faced a suffocating defense and a dominant fourth-quarter performance as the University of West Florida topped MC (13-11, 9-9 Gulf South Conference), 51-33, in the UWF Field House on Thursday, Feb. 13.

Tiara Abron was the lone Choctaw in double figures as she totaled 14 points. It marks the 18th time the Senatobia, Miss., native has tallied 10-plus points and her seventh contest as the squad's leading scorer, which is tied for tops on the team.

Alexis Rowe paced the team with seven rebounds while Nia Coleman and Amelia Bell garnered six each to finish tied for second on the team in the category. It is the eighth contest as the leading rebounder for Rowe, which matches Keller Bigham for the top spot on the team.

The game was still within reach heading into the final period, with West Florida holding a 30-26 edge. However, the Argos erupted with a 21-7 fourth quarter. They shot 56.3% in the final frame while forcing several turnovers to put the game away. UWF, which never trailed, controlled the glass with a 51-35 rebounding advantage and outscored MC 30-24 in the paint. The Argos also capitalized on transition opportunities, recording 12 fast-break points compared to just three for the Choctaws.

Bella Green led the UWF charge with 14 points and 12 rebounds, notching a double-double. Haidyn Pitsch added 14 points

Mississippi College returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 15 as it travels to the Peach State to take on Valdosta State University. Tip-off is 1 p.m. central.
