Women's Hoops Falls at Valdosta State

Amelia Bell leads Choctaws with a season-high 19 points

VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Mississippi College women's basketball team fell 71-50 at Valdosta State University on Saturday, Feb. 15. MC moved to 13-12 on the season and 9-10 in Gulf South Conference action.

Forward Amelia Bell led the charge for the Choctaws, delivering an impressive 19-point performance, shooting 8-for-9 from the field. The O'Fallon, Ill., native's point total marked a new season-high as she surpassed her previous best of 16 points at Spring Hill College on Nov. 21, 2024. The senior also grabbed a team-best six boards.

Tiara Abron joined Bell in double figures as she supplied 12 points – 19th contest with 10-plus points this season, leading the team.

Early in the first quarter, the Choctaws jumped out to a six-point lead behind defensive pressure and an efficient transition attack. MC's defense also made an impact, forcing 18 turnovers and collecting eight steals.

Despite Valdosta State's second-quarter surge, the Blue and Gold battled back, responding with a strong third quarter in which they shot 40 percent from the field. MC battled in the final period, but couldn't overcome the Red and Black on its home floor.

Erin Whalen paced the Blazers with 16 points and 15 rebounds. Mary McMorris and Amaya Broadus added 10 points apiece.

Mississippi College returns to action on Thursday, Feb. 20 as it hosts Trevecca Nazarene University. It is the first of three straight home games to close out the regular season. Tip-off is 5:30 p.m.
