Tennis Secures Key Wins Over UT Permian Basin

TYLER, Texas – The Mississippi College men's and women's tennis teams wrapped up their weekend in Texas with crucial victories over UT Permian Basin on Monday morning. The No. 17 Choctaw men edged out No. 23 UT Permian Basin, 4-3, while the No. 19 Lady Choctaws dominated in a 4-0 sweep, improving to 7-1 on the season.

Men's Tennis: No. 17 MC 4, No. 23 UTPB 3

Mississippi College (5-2) secured a hard-fought victory over the No. 23 Falcons (3-2), clinching four key singles matches after dropping the doubles point.

  • Alex Blanchard continued his strong form at No. 1 singles, earning a commanding 6-3, 6-2 victory over Jonathan Vega.
  • Florian Walcher followed suit at No. 2 singles, taking down Lucas Nakasto 6-3, 6-1.
  • Rafael Sabio secured another point for the Choctaws with a straight-set 7-5, 7-5 win at No. 4 singles.
  • Sergio Ramirez Ocana clinched the match for MC at No. 6 singles, winning 6-2, 7-5 over Lucas Nitzschke.

Women's Tennis: No. 19 MC 4, UTPB 0

The Lady Choctaws (7-1) put together a dominant performance against the Falcons (1-2), taking the doubles point before sweeping through singles play.

  • Ana Julissa De Mata Rodríguez and Emma Roberts secured a 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles, while Ricio Martinez and Katharina Weber followed with a 6-1 victory at No. 2 to clinch the doubles point.
  • In singles, Roberts (6-3, 6-3), De Mata Rodríguez (6-4, 6-0), and Weber (6-4, 3-6, 6-1) each earned victories to complete the sweep.

Both teams return to action on Saturday, March 1, when they travel to Searcy, Ark., to face Harding. First serve is set for 10 a.m. CT.
