PENSACOLA, Fla. — The Mississippi College men's tennis program turned in an impressive showing at the ITA South Regional, advancing three doubles teams to the quarterfinals for the first time in program history. The Choctaws were the only university in the region with three teams represented in the round of eight.
Newcomers Alex Holder and Florian Walcher faced the tournament's top-seeded duo from West Florida, falling 8–2. Fellow newcomer Matias Ruiz, a JUCO national champion, and freshman Charles Lefort battled hard before dropping a close 8–6 match to Embry-Riddle.
Veteran Sergio Ramirez Ocana and freshman Joshua Hinton delivered the highlight of the event, rallying from 4–6 down to defeat the No. 2 seeds from Lee University, 8–6.
That victory sent the pair to the semifinals—the first for an MC doubles team at this event—where they narrowly fell 8–6 to Saint Leo after a single break of serve on a deuce point at 6–6.
The regional tournament was held Oct. 2–4 in Pensacola, Florida.
"I am really proud of our ladies and our men for their commitment to improvement and the progress we've already witnessed in the past few weeks," said Head Coach Michael Ward. "Colleen Roberts and Nick Rosatti are making an immediate impact as coaches, helping our players, our culture, and the future of our program. As coaches, we're motivated and excited with the improvement so far, but we have a lot of work to do for our players to accomplish their goals. We're excited to support that work and watch these special players improve heading into spring championships."
