Volleyball Falls in Four Sets

LIVINGSTON, Ala. --- Mississippi College fell to West Alabama in four sets at Pruitt Hall on Thursday night.  The setback snapped 13-match win streak.

Ellie Foco led the offensive charge with a career-high 12 kills and contributed two blocks. Cydney Mitchell dominated at the net with five total blocks. Samarin Kipple was a defensive standout, recording 22 digs and adding eight assists. Reese Regner facilitated the offense with 24 assists and contributed 15 digs.

MC began the first set with a steady exchange of points with West Alabama, marked by early kills from Foco, supported by assists from Sophia Saxon. However, West Alabama capitalized on several errors and built a lead. Despite this, the Choctaws' defense made an impact with blocks from Mitchell and Mary Grace Foster, narrowing the gap to 9-6.

Midway through the set, a service ace by Regner and a series of attack errors by UWA allowed MC to close in at 15-10. Foco and Meg Paparella continued to find success at the net, contributing crucial points that kept the team within reach. The team mounted a late push with Paparella's multiple kills, bringing the score to 22-18.

The set concluded with West Alabama holding off the Choctaws' comeback efforts, despite additional points from Paparella and Audrianna Green. West Alabama secured the set with a 25-20 advantage, ending with a final kill by Cadence Goeden.

MC began the second set with a strong 4-0 lead, highlighted by two service aces from Paparella. The Blue and Gold maintained momentum with contributions from Foster and Rhaia Davey, keeping West Alabama on the defensive.

As the set progressed, West Alabama responded with a series of successful plays, including kills from KB Kinney and Jazlyn Snow, which allowed them to inch ahead. MC fought back to tie the set at 21-21 after a kill by Foco and a service error by West Alabama.

Despite a determined effort from The Blue and Gold, including a kill by Davey to even the score at 22-22, West Alabama closed the set with a narrow 25-22 victory, highlighted by a late kill from Snow.

MC began the third set with a strong showing, highlighted by an early kill from Felicity Pratt assisted by Regner. This set the tone for a competitive start, as the visitors quickly established a back-and-forth exchange of points with West Alabama. The Choctaws managed to edge ahead with Foco and Davey contributing crucial kills, maintaining a slight advantage during the initial exchanges.

The set saw a series of momentum shifts, with The Blue and Gold pulling away at a critical juncture. A service error by West Alabama, followed by attacks from Foster and Mitchell, helped MC build a significant lead. Despite some attack errors, The Blue and Gold regained control with a key block by Foco and Davey, extending their advantage.

In the closing moments, MC sealed the set with a decisive finish, highlighted by a service ace from Pratt. This capped a late 5-0 run, allowing The Blue and Gold to close the set with a 25-20 victory, maintaining their edge and securing the set win.

West Alabama took control early in the fourth set, capitalizing on an attack error by Foco to gain an initial lead. MC responded with a kill by Pratt, assisted by Regner, leveling the score briefly. However, West Alabama managed to extend their advantage through consistent scoring, including a service ace by Klára Bobánová, putting the home team ahead 8-3.

The Choctaws regrouped with key plays from Foster and a service ace by Maeve Allen, narrowing the gap to 8-5. West Alabama, however, maintained momentum with multiple points from Kinney, including a service ace by Bailey Keef, creating a 13-6 cushion. MC found brief success with a sequence of points from Foco and Emma Levingston, but West Alabama countered effectively, keeping a 19-12 lead.

In the closing phase, The Blue and Gold made a late push with back-to-back blocks by Green and Mitchell, reducing the deficit to 22-16. Despite this effort, West Alabama sealed the set with a final kill by Gracie Pierscinski, concluding the set 25-16 in favor of the home team.

MC returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 25, as they travel to Montgomery, Ala., to face AUM. Match time is 2 p.m.
