MONTGOMERY, Ala. --- Mississippi College completed a regular-season sweep as it bested in sets on Saturday at the AUM Athletics Complex. MC improved to 9-14 on the season and 6-7 in Gulf South Conference action.
Mary Grace Foster led the team with 18 kills and added eight digs across five frames.
Samarin Kipple contributed significantly on defense with a career-high tying 31 digs while also providing nine assists.
Audrianna Green was effective at the net, recording five total blocks, including one solo block.
Sophia Saxon made an impact with four service aces and added 20 assists in her five appearances.
A back and forth affair through the opening set saw the two teams deadlocked at 15-all.
Audrianna Green's performance was pivotal throughout the set, consistently responding to AUM's advances with well-timed kills. MC found themselves trailing late in the set, but a sequence of errors by the Warhawks allowed MC to close the gap. Foster's offensive efforts were instrumental as she delivered the final points, allowing MC to secure the first set with a 25-23 lead.
AUM began the second set with a strong offensive surge, quickly establishing a 4-0 lead through a service ace and effective kills. MC's
Rhaia Davey responded with a kill, initiating a short-lived comeback that brought the score to 5-4. Despite efforts from Foster and Green, AUM extended their lead to 9-4.
MC's
Cydney Mitchell and
Meg Paparella managed to cut into the deficit with timely kills, but service errors hindered further progress. AUM maintained control, widening the gap to 13-6. Paparella and Davey delivered crucial points, yet AUM's offensive consistency kept them ahead as they secured a 25-17 victory.
The third set began with a tense back-and-forth as the teams traded points, neither able to establish a significant lead. The Blue and Gold initially gained momentum with key plays, including a kill by Foster, assisted by
Reese Regner, and a service ace from Saxon, pushing the score to 5-3 in their favor. AUM responded, keeping the score tight and eventually leveling the set at 15-15.
In the latter stages, MC made significant strides with contributions from Mitchell, whose kills helped to regain a lead at 20-18. However, AUM capitalized on a few errors and key plays to tie the score again at 23-23. Despite a late kill by Paparella to even the score at 24-24, AUM closed the set with a final service ace, ending the set 26-24 in their favor.
The fourth set began with a shift in momentum as MC faced an initial deficit. AUM took the early lead with three consecutive points. MC responded with a kill by Paparella, narrowing the score to 3-1. A service error by AUM allowed MC to gain another point, but AUM maintained a narrow lead early in the set.
MC leveled the score at 4-4 with a kill by Green. Following a series of exchanges, MC tied the score again at 6-6 with a kill from Mitchell. The team then took its first lead of the set at 13-12 with another Mitchell kill. AUM struggled as MC extended the lead to 17-12, highlighted by a service ace. As the set progressed, MC continued to capitalize on AUM's errors and maintained their advantage. With strong offensive contributions from Foster and Paparella, MC secured the set, winning 25-19.
MC opened the fifth set with early struggles, trailing 3-0 after a service error and a block by AUM. However, a kill by Davey and a block from Green and Davey helped level the score at 3-3. After trading points, MC gained momentum with a kill by Foster and a service ace from Saxon, lifting the team to a 6-5 advantage.
Holland Williams contributed two consecutive kills to extend the lead to 9-5.
The Choctaws maintained control with a series of points, highlighted by a service ace from
Maeve Allen, pushing the score to 14-6. Despite a late AUM point, Williams secured the final kill, concluding the set with a 15-7 victory for MC.
The Choctaws are set to host Trevecca Nazarene on October 31. Match time is 6 p.m.
