Women's Hoops Sinks Buccaneers

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College women's basketball team snapped a five-game slide with a 75-51, Gulf South Conference victory over Christian Brothers University on Saturday, Jan. 25. MC improved to 10-9 on the season and 6-7 in league play.

The victory is the fifth straight and the longest in the series for the Blue and Gold. It is also the seventh time reaching the 70-point mark on the campaign. The margin of victory is the largest in conference play for the team and the second longest on the season, trailing only the 48-point margin over Belhaven on Nov. 14.

All five Choctaw starters scored in double figures while 11 added to the point total. Alexis Rowe paced the squad with 12 points – her ninth on the campaign with 10-or-more points and her fourth as the team's leading scorer.

Tiara Abron, Amelia Bell and Nia Coleman added 11 points each in the affair while Tytiana Buckley rounded out the group with 10 points. Bell and Coleman tied for tops on the squad with six rebounds each.

After the two teams stood deadlocked following the first 10 minutes of action, the Choctaws gained some distance as they outscored the Red and Black by five in the second stanza and took a 28-23 margin in at the half.

The Choctaw provided pressure and pulled away in the fourth, following a tightly-contested third. MC outscored the Bucs by 20 in the final 10 minutes. The Blue and Gold dominated in the paint as it bested CBU by 10 in the paint in the game and made the most of its second-chance opportunities with 25. MC also held slim advantages in fast-break and bench points.

Jada Hood paced the Red and Black with 11 points while Nyapar Mathot pulled down seven boards.

MC held the lead for 35-plus of the 40 minutes contest despite four lead changes and five stalemates.
