Choctaws Falter in Tough Battle with No. 19 Union

CLINTON, Miss. --- Tytiana Buckley recorded her fourth, 20-plus point performance of the season as the Mississippi College women's basketball team fell 70-62 to 19th-ranked Union University on Thursday, Jan. 23.

Buckley totaled 22 points in the setback. She leads the team with 20-or-more efforts this season and notched her first since Jan. 2. The point total was three short of her career-high of 25 points set earlier this season against Auburn University at Montgomery on Dec. 16. It is the 12th time in double figures for the junior.

Tiara Abron joined the Meridian, Miss., native as she put up 11 points while Keller Bigham finished shy of her second career double-double as she tallied nine points and a team-best nine rebounds. Abron leads the team with 13 double-digit scoring performances on the campaign. It is the eighth time this season Bigham has paced the squad on the glass and her second time with nine.

The contest featured eight lead changes and five stalemates as both teams held eight-point leads – the largest for both sides. MC, which seized a 10-point advantage in second-chance points, grabbed its largest margin with eight and half minutes in the second quarter and came during a 12-0 run. Four Choctaws scored during the run, led by Buckley with six points.

The Blue and Gold held a 53-51 lead with 7:24 remaining in the game, but a three-point play gave the visitors from the Volunteer State a one-point advantage and sparked an 11-1 run, giving the Bulldogs their largest margin of the contest with just over three minutes to play in the game. MC trimmed the deficit to five points, but couldn't overcome the late push.

Bethany Dillard led the Bulldogs with 17 points while Olivia Lee, who tied for tops on the team with six rebounds, added 11 points. Jazalyn Anousinh joined Lee with six boards.

Mississippi College returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 25 as it hosts Christian Brothers University. The contest is streamed on GoChoctaws.com via FloCollege. Tip is at 2 p.m.
