PENSACOLA, Fla. — The No. 5 Mississippi College women's soccer team opened Gulf South Conference play with a tough 3-1 loss to West Florida on Friday evening.
West Florida struck early, with Julieta Limardo scoring just six seconds into the match, assisted by Mya Swinton. Limardo found the net again at the 19-minute mark, this time receiving an assist from Ahnalie Layman, giving the Argonauts a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.
Mississippi College responded in the second half when Jaylen Bodry scored her first goal of the season at 53:25, cutting the deficit to 2-1. However, West Florida quickly regained control, with Emma Beltz scoring the Argonauts' third goal in the 61st minute, sealing the victory.
The Lady Choctaws struggled to capitalize on their offensive opportunities, recording just five shots, two of which were on target. In contrast, West Florida fired off 11 shots, with seven on goal. Jessi Carro, the starting goalkeeper for Mississippi College, made four saves during the match.
Both teams maintained a disciplined approach, with Mississippi College committing only two fouls compared to West Florida's five. The Choctaws also did not earn any corner kicks throughout the match.
Mississippi College, now 3-1-0 overall and 0-1-0 in the conference, will look to bounce back in their next matchup against Spring Hill College on Sunday at 1 p.m.
