Choctaw Outlast West Georgia and Weather Delays for Series Finale Victory

GSC Tournament Berth Remains Intact

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College baseball team closed out its Gulf South Conference series against the University of West Georgia with an 8-6 victory in a contest that witnessed three-plus hours of weather delays. MC improved to 19-22 on the season and 10-17 in league play. The Wolves falter to 22-22 on the campaign and 13-14 in the conference.

A trio of Choctaw collected multiple hits in the effort, led by Caleb Reese going 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI and two runs scored. In marked the second consecutive multi-hit effort for the fifth-year standout as he notched a pair of doubles in the second game of the doubleheader on Friday evening.

Cooper Gadman (3-1) notched the victory on the bump. The right-hander battled three stoppages in play due to weather to record six innings in the start on the bump. He struck out four in the contest and allowed four runs – three earned – on six hits.

Kyle Collet (1) picked up his first save of the season as he finished the final three frames and allowed two runs on four hits and gathered one strikeout.

Garrett Moody (2-3) was saddled with the loss on the bump for the Red and Blue. He tossed two frames in the start as he allowed four runs – two earned – on five hits. He struck out three and walked one. He was one of four hurlers to take the bump in the contest for the Wolves.

Blaise Breerwood and Cole Drake joined Reese with multi-hit performances as each garnered two hits in the outing. Drake drove in a run along with Wesley Sides and JT Vance.

MC jumped on the board early as it plated four runs in its first trip to the plate. Sides extended the lead to 5-0 in the bottom of the third as he relocated the first he saw out of the first delay over the center field wall. It marked his 11th home run of the season, which places him third on squad. It also adds him the to the top 15 in single-season home runs alongside Reese and Vance.

UWG added its first two runs in the top of the fourth, but the Blue and Gold responded with two of its own in the home half of the inning to maintain the five-run advantage. The Wolves added a run in the fifth, sixth and seventh to trim the deficit to two runs heading into the final two frames.

Reese collected his team-leading 13th home run of the season with a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth, giving the squad a three-run cushion heading into the final frame. The home run equals the water mark set by Vance, who also has 13 this season.

UWG attempted a rally in the top of the ninth as it logged two hits and had the game-tying run come to the plate with one down. However, Collet got Jack Witmer to ground out, although pushing a run across, for the second out of the inning. Witmer finished the contest with two hits, which tied for tops on the team for the Red and Blue.

Now trailing by two runs, but with two down, Cade Hohl looked to extend the contest as he delivered a slicing, pitch into left field, but Reese gathered the fly ball on a diving catch to ice the contest and send the Blue and Gold faithful home happy following five-plus hours of action.

Mississippi College returns to action on Tuesday, Apr. 23 as it closes out the regular season, home slate against the University of Arkansas at Monticello. First pitch is slated for 5 p.m.
