Home Runs Abound as Choctaw Walk Off Against UAM

Choctaws combine for four home runs in 2024 home finale

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College baseball team closed out its 2024 home slate with its walk-off home run as Caleb Reese relocated a 2-1 pitch over the left center field wall to give the Choctaws (20-22) an 11-10 victory over the University of Arkansas at Monticello on Tuesday, Apr. 23.

The home run was the fourth of the game for the Blue and Gold and the Bossier City, La., native's 14th of the season. The homer was also the second hit of the game for the fifth-year standout.

JT Vance and Wesley Sides each joined Reese with multiple hits with all three recording a home run in the contest. Sides paced the squad with four RBI while Cole Drake, who added to the home run total with a solo shot in the sixth inning, and Vance added a pair of RBI.

Jack Bell (3-2) notched his third win of the season on the bump as he tossed the final out of the top of the 10th in relief of Michael Sutton, who recorded a scoreless 2.2 frames in a relief appearance, where he struck out two and allowed two hits.

The Choctaw trailed by as many as six runs in the contest, but chipped away at the deficit. A three-run, fourth inning narrowed the gap to two runs as Sides drove in a pair and Vance added an RBI in the frame. Sides knotted the contest at 9-all in the bottom of the sixth with his 12th home run of the season, which scored Reese.

The Blue and Gold grabbed its first lead of the game as Drake blasted his solo home run over the left field wall. The long ball is the sixth of the season for the Brandon, Miss., product. However, the advantage was short lived as Aiden Garrett forced a second stalemate at 10-all with a solo home run of his own in the top of the seventh.

The two squads remained deadlocked until the bottom of the 10th and Reese's solo home run. The Boll Weevils attempted to steal the contest in the top of the 10th as Camden Tanner singled to left field, but was erased from the base path trying to extend the base hit to double as Drake fired the ball back into the waiting glove of Blaise Breerwood at second.

Trey Miller (1-2) was saddled with the loss for the Green and White as he allowed the game-winning, home run.

It is the third, extra-inning contest for the Choctaw this season and the second victory over a member of the Great American Conference. The first came on Mar. 12 against Henderson State, an 8-7 decision in 11 innings.

Mississippi College returns to action on Friday, Apr. 26 as it travels to Cleveland, Miss., for a three-game, Gulf South Conference series against Delta State University. First pitch is set for 5 p.m.
