Choctaw Bested in GSC Twinbill

Senior Day Spoiled

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College baseball team dropped a Gulf South Conference doubleheader on Friday, Apr. 19 to the University of West Georgia. The Wolves (22-21, 13-13 GSC) topped MC (18-22, 7-16 GSC) 8-3 in the opener and kept the momentum going to start the second game of the contest as they walked away with an 11-3 victory.

Caleb Reese paced the Choctaw at the dish going for 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles – both in the second game – after being on the receiving end of four hit by pitch in the opening game of the series. The Bossier City, La., native registered one official at bat in the opening game, but scored once. The two doubles moved his multiple-hit total to 16 on the season and his 14th with a pair of hits.

Korey Cooper joined Reese with a multiple-hit performance as he garnered a pair of singles in the series lidlifter – two of the Blue and Gold's five hits in the contest. It marks the seventh, two-base hit performance of the season for Cooper and his 11th of the season.

Bryce LaRocca collected his fourth home run of the season in the opener as he sent an 0-1 pitch over the left center wall. It stands as his second solo home run of the season and the third of his career. It moves the team's total to 54 on the campaign, which stands as second most in the conference.

Choctaw starters Holland Townes and Jack Bell were tagged with the decisions on the mound. Townes (3-5) allowed four runs on 10 hits in 5.1 innings of action. He collected three strikeouts, which improved his team-leading total to 62, and walked a pair. Bell (2-2) surrendered seven runs on seven hits in 2.0 innings as he fanned a pair.

MC trailed by a pair of runs through eight innings in the first game of the day, but gave up three runs in the top of the ninth. The Red and Blue capitalized on a miscue and strung together two hits to extend the lead to the game-winning, five-run margin. The Choctaws looked to rally in their final at bat as LaRocca led off the inning with a walk and two batters later, Reese was kerplunked for the fourth time in the game to place a pair of runners on the bases with two outs, but the runners were stranded, becoming the eighth and nine runners left on base.

UWG rode the energy from the opening game into the second contest as it used a seven-run, third frame to propel it to the series-clinching win. MC got on the board first with a Reese, double down the left field line to score Blaise Breerwood. JT Vance followed with a sacrifice fly to score Reese.

The Wolves sent 11 to the plate in the visitor half of the third inning and totaled six hits to spur their big inning. MC got a run back in the bottom of the inning, but a run in the top of the fourth and three more in the top of the seventh iced the contest for the visitors from the Peach State.

Seth Dudley (5-2) picked up the complete-game victory as he allowed one earned run and gave up four hits, alongside a walk and two strikeouts. The win on the mound came on the heels of a Jonathan Hickman (4-2) 4.2 innings decision in the opener. Hickman gave up two runs – one earned – on three hits in a relief appearance. He combined with Will Dean for six strikeouts in the contest – three apiece.

Mississippi College and West Georgia wrap up the series on Saturday, Apr. 20. First pitch is marked for 1 p.m.
