CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College baseball team completed the three-game series sweep as the Choctaws (5-2) downed Miles College, 13-3, at Frierson Field at Dickins-Scoper Stadium on Saturday, Feb. 10.
Â
The last time the program run-ruled an opponent was Feb. 28, 2023 as it topped nationally-ranked Southern Arkansas University, 16-3. The weekend sweep is the first since 2021 when the program took all three from Auburn University at Montgomery Apr. 17-18 in Clinton.
Â
A quartet of Choctaws recorded multiple-hit performances in the game headlined by
Wesley Sides' three-hit day. The Southhaven, Miss., native logged two, two-run home runs and a triple to pace the squad.
Caleb Reese,
JT Vance and
Cole Drake each notched a pair of hits. Reese finished second on the team in RBI with three while Vance and Drake plated a pair each.
Austin Huggins (1-0) registered his first win of the season as he tossed five complete frames with a season-high tying seven strikeouts. He surrendered three runs on six hits along with a walk in the start.
Â
The Blue and Gold held a 5-3 advantage through three and a half frames, due in large part to home runs from
Tyler Jacobsen and Reese in the third. Reese's long ball moved him one home run shy of tying former Choctaw Blaine Crim (2016-19) for second all-time in the category.
Â
The Choctaw poured it on in the bottom of the fourth with five runs. After
Blaise Breerwood scored on a failed pick-off attempt from second base, Vance doubled to right center and plated a pair of runs. Sides closed out the scoring in the frame with his first of two, two-run home runs. The Southaven, Miss., native added his second home run in the sixth to expand the lead to 12-3.
Â
Reese delivered the game-clinching run in the bottom of the seventh as he singled through the left side to score Breerwood. The Bossier City, La., native's single was the 10th of the game and the fourth of the season with 10-plus hits.
Â
Kaleb Priest and Nick Copen led the Golden Bears with two hits each. Branson Honea (0-1) took the loss on the mound as he allowed five runs - four earned on three hits in three innings of action.
Â
Mississippi College returns to action on Friday, Feb. 16 as it hosts the University of Alabama in Huntsville in the conference opener. Friday's contest is the first of three games over the weekend against the Chargers and is slated for a 3 p.m. start.
