Choctaws Topple Blazers in Four Sets

Senior Day Successful in A.E. Wood Coliseum

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College volleyball team closed out its regular-season home slate with a four-set, Gulf South Conference victory over Valdosta State University on Saturday, Nov. 9. MC improves to 13-13 on the season and 11-7 in the conference.

The win keeps the Blue and Gold in line for a top four slot in the GSC Tournament.

Lydia Paulette logged her ninth career contest with 20-or-more kills as she led the team with 20 kills. Ali Wiggins also reached the 20-plus mark as she helped the direct the offense with 23 assists. It marks the 28th of her career. Caylin Pixley chimed in 17 dimes.

On the defensive end, Samarin Kipple became the first player to reach 30 since Nov. 12, 2021. Rhaia Davey paced the team with four total blocks while Mary Grace Foster added two. Paulette chimed in 17 digs with 11 coming from Wiggins.

The victory avenged an earlier four-set setback to the Blazers on their home court and is just the second program decision over the Black and Red.

Mississippi College dropped the first set, but quickly evened the contest at a set each with a commanding 25-15 victory in the second. The Blue and Gold opened the third with a 7-3 run, but saw the Blazers rally and pull within a point at 12-11. MC delivered a 5-0 run to push the margin to six points. VSU closed to within a point once again, but the Choctaw closed the set on a 6-3, including a Davey kill to seal the decision and place the home standers up 2-1.

In the fourth set, MC opened on a 4-0 run and never looked back as they claimed the frame 25-17. The Blue and Gold closed the set on a 9-3 run, including a 7-1 spurt. Pixley wrapped up the match with a service ace – one of a career-high six for her on the day and 12 for the squad, which is third most this season, trailing a pair of 13 ace nights against Southeastern Oklahoma State University (Sept. 6) and the University of West Alabama (Oct. 24).

The Choctaws return to action on Friday, Nov. 15 as they travel to the Volunteer State for the final two regular-season outings. They open the road swing against Christian Brothers with a 6 p.m. first serve.
