CLINTON, Miss. – Mississippi College's women's soccer season came to an end with a heartbreaking 4-3 loss to Montevallo in the Gulf South Conference Quarterfinals on Sunday afternoon at Robert P. Longabaugh Field. The Lady Choctaws, who finished the regular season with an 8-6-3 record, battled through a back-and-forth game, but ultimately fell short in the second half.
Mississippi College struck first in the 23rd minute when senior defender Stella French scored her first goal of the season, assisted by Parker St. Amant. The early goal gave MC a 1-0 lead, and just before the halftime whistle, the Lady Choctaws doubled their advantage. Margherita Giubilato found the back of the net in the 41st minute for her sixth goal of the year, assisted by Vail Wartes, giving MC a 2-0 lead heading into the break.
However, the Falcons came roaring back in the second half. Montevallo's Shadia Valenzuela, who had been a standout for the Falcons throughout the season, scored twice in quick succession to level the match. Her first goal came in the 51st minute, and just 15 minutes later, she found the net again in the 66th minute, assisted by Raylene Alcaraz.
With the score tied at 2-2, the game remained tense and competitive. MC regained the lead in the 62nd minute when Summer Utzig netted her second goal of the season, assisted by Caroline Naman. The goal put the Lady Choctaws up 3-2, but Montevallo quickly responded.
The Falcons capitalized on a set-piece opportunity in the 85th minute, when an own goal from Mississippi College brought the score to 3-3. With momentum on their side, Montevallo sealed the win in the 87th minute when Lainey Farabaugh scored off a pass from Valenzuela, putting the Falcons ahead 4-3.
Mississippi College finished with 13 shots in the match, including six on target with Jessi Carro tallying four saved. Despite a late push, Mississippi College could not break through Montevallo's defense, and the match ended with the Lady Choctaws' season concluding in the quarterfinals.
