Paulette Sets New Record; Choctaws Stumble in Music City

NASHVILLE, Tenn. --- Lydia Paulette set a new Mississippi College career points record as the Choctaws fell in three sets during Gulf South Conference action at Trevecca Nazarene University on Friday, Nov. 1. MC moved to 12-12 on the campaign and 10-6 in conference play.

Paulette, who reset the career kills list, became the points leader the following night with three points in the first set against the Trojans. The Tuscaloosa, Ala., native totaled nine points on the night and became the new leader with 1,508 points, surpassing former Choctaw Kendall Platt (2018-22), who held the record at 1,500. Paulette finished the night with a team-best eight kills and a service ace.

Meg Paparella finished second on the team in kills by Paulette as she totaled seven and added an ace. Ali Wiggins and Caylin Pixley combined for all 25 assists for the Blue and Gold. Wiggins dished out 13 with 12 coming off the hands of Pixley. Wiggins also added an ace.

On the defensive end of the net, Julia Sumrall led the charge at the net with three total blocks while Mary Grace Foster and Rhaia Davey provided two apiece. Paulette led the team with 14 digs.

MC trailed most of the first set, but battled back to pull within a point as it rode a 5-0 run late. Paparella and Foster provided a kill during the run alongside a Wiggins ace. Sumrall and Foster combined for a rejection during the stretch. However, The Purple and White answered with a 4-2 run to close out the set with a 25-22 victory.

After the Trojans claimed the second set 25-12, the two squads tussled back and forth in the first-ever meeting between the two teams on the Trojans' home floor. A Paparella kill forced a 21-all stalemate late in the frame, but the Trojans, like in the first set strung together a late run, 4-1, to capture the frame and match.

The setback marked the first in the series for the Choctaw as they had claimed the previous three meetings, including a four-set victory in Clinton earlier in the month.

Mississippi College returns to action on Friday, Nov. 8 as it hosts the University of West Florida in GSC action. First serve at 6 p.m.
