Choctaw Sweep Lee in Home Opener

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College volleyball team equaled its overall record and moved to 4-1 in the Gulf South Conference following a sweep over Lee University on Friday, Oct. 4 in the Choctaws' (6-6) home opener.

The win marked the seventh straight in the series for the Blue and Gold.

A trio of Choctaw recorded double figure kills, paced by Lydia Paulette with 18. Rhaia Davey and Mary Grace Foster chimed in 10 kills each. It marked the 60th career double-digit kill performance for Paulette and the second for Davey. It is the first for Foster in her career.

Ali Wiggins notched her 24th contest with 20-plus assists during her tenure and the seventh on the campaign as she totaled a team best 23. Caylin Pixley added 13 dimes.

The Choctaw totaled 53 kills in the straight-sets win, which is the third time this season the team has reached 50-plus in the category.

Samarin Kipple chimed in 11 digs on the defensive end of the floor.

After tightly-contested first two sets, the Choctaw finished off the match in grand fashion in the third as it topped the visiting Flames, 25-11. It marks the fewest points by the opposition in a set this season. The Blue and Gold motored to an 8-2 advantage in the third set and took a double-digit lead at 14-4, following a Davey kill. The squad reached its largest lead of the match, 20-9, after a Foster kill.

The decision is the third sweep this season for the Blue and Gold and as many in conference play.

The first two sets played part to 25 deadlocks and 12 lead changes and played into extra points. In the opening set, the Choctaw fought off set-point and knot the set at 24-all following a kill from Foster. After Julia Sumrall gave the Blue and Gold a one-point lead, Paulette closed the set with a kill off a feed from Wiggins.

In the second frame, Lee trailed 23-19, but rallied to a 23-all tie. It marked one of eight stalemates down the stretch with the last coming at 30-even. Two Flame miscues in the final two points handed MC a 2-0 advantage in the contest.

Mississippi College returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 5 as it hosts Trevecca Nazarene. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
