How Sweep It Is: Choctaws Topple Union in Straight Sets

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College volleyball team recorded its second consecutive victory of the weekend and in its series with Union University as it swept in straight sets on Saturday, Oct. 19. MC improves to 9-9 on the season and 7-3 in the Gulf South Conference. The Bulldogs fall to 5-13 and 3-6 in the league.
 
The sweep is the fifth this season for the Blue and Gold and the third all-time against the Red and White – all coming since 2021.
 
Lydia Paulette notched her 65th career contest with double figure kills as the Tuscaloosa, Ala., native paced the squad with 16. The senior continues her ascent toward the career kills leader spot. She is resides in second with 1,399 kills during her four seasons in Clinton. Former Choctaw Kendall Platt (2018-22) holds the top slot with 1,271.
 
Ali Wiggins helped direct the Blue and Gold offense as she dished out 18 assists. The Enterprise, Ala., product added three service aces to sit second on the team on the day. Samarin Kipple, who tied for tops on the team with 11 digs, contributed to the offense effort as well as she reset her career-high in aces with five, which paced the squad. The Pilot Mountain, N.C., native added five assists as well.
 
Londyn Bakeris tied Kipple with 11 digs on the defensive end while Meg Paparella, Julia Sumrall and Rhaia Davey supplied a team-best two blocks apiece.
 
MC dominated in the opening set, winning 25-19 as it never saw a tie or lead change and repeated with a similar performance in the third frame as it claimed a 25-20 victory to clinch the match. After a one-all stalemate early, MC rattled off nine straight points, including four of Kipple's aces during the run.
 
The second set was a tussle with 10 deadlocks and four lead changes midway through. The Choctaw gained control of the frame as it went on a 5-0 run to gather a 19-14 advantage. MC finished the frame with a 25-21 win.
 
Mississippi College continues its six-match homestand on Tuesday, Oct. 22 as it faces the University of Alabama in Huntsville. First serve at 6 p.m.
