CLINTON, Miss. – The Mississippi College men's soccer team delivered a commanding performance on Friday night, defeating the University of West Alabama 3-0 in Gulf South Conference play at Robert P. Longabaugh Field.
Lewis Matton was the standout player, scoring two goals in the first half, both assisted by Sergio Garrido. Matton found the back of the net in the 21st and 26th minutes, putting the Choctaws ahead early and setting the tone for the match.
In the final minutes, Denis O. John added to the scoreline with a goal in the 88th minute, assisted by Joseph Moore, solidifying the Choctaws' victory.
Mississippi College outshot West Alabama 25-8, with eight of those shots on target. The Choctaws' defense held strong, allowing just two shots on goal, while goalkeeper Cole Turner made two saves to keep a clean sheet.
The Choctaws also had a notable advantage in corner kicks, earning six to West Alabama's four, and committed an equal number of fouls (7) as the Tigers.
Mississippi College will look to carry this momentum into their next match on Sunday, October 22, at 3:30 p.m. against the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH).
