Choctaws Stumble at No. 4 Union

JACKSON, Tenn. --- The Mississippi College women's basketball team stumbled and dropped an 87-41 decision on the road as they fell to fourth-ranked Union University on Saturday, Jan. 20. The outcome snapped the Choctaws (6-9, 5-7 GSC) three-game win streak. UU improved to 18-1 overall and 12-1 in the league.

Karly Ivy led the team in scoring as she provided 10 points. The Denton, Texas, native was 5-for-11 from the field and finished third on the team in rebounds with four. Sky Vaughn finished second on the team in scoring with eight points as she added six rebounds – the most on the team. Nia Coleman paced the squad on the glass with eight.

MC was held to 35.0 percent shooting from the floor and struggled from behind the arc as it connected on just 3-for-11. The unit also was limited at the free-throw line as it garnered just 10 attempts and knocked down six.

Brooke Hampel paced the Bulldogs with 11 points while Shanique Lucas led the team on the glass with five boards. UU shot 45.3 percent from the field, including a 41.9 clip from the 3-point line, and was 16-of-20 from the charity stripe.

The Blue and Gold trailed by just 10 points at the end of the first 10 minutes of play, but a second-quarter surge placed the homestanding Bulldogs up 52-14 at the intermission and conference's top team never looked back the remainder of the way.

The Choctaws attempted a rally in the fourth quarter as it outscored UU 16-9 over the final 10 minutes, but it wasn't enough to rally and overcome the early deficit.

Mississippi College returns to action on Thursday, Jan. 25 as it welcomes the University of West Florida to A.E. Wood Coliseum. The Choctaws have won their last four conference contests on their home floor this season. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
