Choctaws Plunder CBU, 2-0

Memphis, Tenn. --- The Mississippi College men's soccer team secured a 2-0 victory over Christian Brothers this Friday evening (September 22nd).

The match started out with an offensive flurry by MC, and more specifically, Denis O. John, as he tallied three shots on target in a six-minute span to open for the Choctaws. Both offenses were in full swing as the two teams put up 19 collective shots in the first half, 11 of which for the Buccaneers and eight for MC. However, the scoreboard still showed zeroes as the half ended.

The first goal came in the 53rd minute off a Kento Tani corner kick to Guilherme Santos, who gave the ball a redirect off his head into the opposite bottom corner for the 1-0 lead and his third goal of the 2023 campaign. For the following 20 minutes, both teams were not able to generate many shots on target, only one by MC in that span, but that changed in the 80th minute. Max Buesch found O. John open on a counterattack and the freshman from Spain delivered his fifth goal of the season on a shot that rolled under the CBU keeper to ice the game for the Choctaws, 2-0.

Not only did MC's defense stop a Buccaneers offense for the remaining 10 minutes, but Choctaws' keeper Cole Turner posted one of his best outings; recording eight saves on the match and had his first clean sheet of the season and number five of his career. CBU outshot the Choctaws 19-11 on the match and was an 8-7 margin of on target shots in favor of the Buccaneers as well.

With the win, MC leads Division II in goal differential, scoring offense, total goals, and total points with Buesch tied for third in the country with his seven total goals.

Mississippi College (6-1-1) looks to continue their winning ways against Union this Sunday afternoon (September 22nd). The match will begin at approximately 3:30 p.m. CT in Jackson, Tenn.
