Clinton, Miss. --- The Mississippi College men's soccer team defeated Spring Hill 7-1 this Sunday afternoon (September 17th) to claim their first conference victory of the season.
The Choctaws only had one goal in the opening 45 minutes, and it came off the foot of
Guilherme Santos from a great cross in the box from
Gage Sorey. to open the scoring for the Choctaws. The Badgers only had a singular shot on target the whole match as Brett Stow found an opening in the goal from 25 yards out and snuck it in to tie the game. Although the Choctaws outshot Spring Hill 12-2 in the first half, it was tied going into the final 45.
While both teams felt each other out in the first 15 minutes left of the second half. the Choctaws finally broke loose in the 60th minute when the Japanese junior
Yamato Fujishima perfectly curled in a left footed shot from just outside the box to start the Choctaws' offensive flood. Also getting on the scoring column was
Lawson White in the 64th minute and
Max Buesch in the 72nd. Buesch's goal puts him at five on the season, which puts him in the lone top spot in the Gulf South Conference.
Denis O. John got in on the fun in the 78th minute from a
Luke Fanstone cross,
Pawemi Kumwenda has his second goal of the year after cleaning up a previous shot off the bar just eight minutes later, and
William Janous topped it all off with an 87th minute goal.
The last time that Mississippi College has had six goals in a half was against Pensacola Christian on September 20, 2016 where they won 11-1 and scored nine goals in the second half. The last time they did this against a conference opponent, however, was all the way back on October 3, 2008 against Louisiana Christian when MC was in the American Southwest Conference.
The next match for the Choctaws is a midweek contest at home against Tougaloo College this Tuesday, September 19th at Robert P. Longabaugh Field with kickoff set for 3:30 p.m. CT.
