CLINTON, Miss. --- With a Gulf South Conference-best, all-academic team total and 100-plus academic honor roll nominees, Mississippi College was well represented on the conference's spring academic list, as announced by the league on Friday, June 16.
The Choctaw spring sports combined to place a conference-leading 18 student-athletes on the all-academic team. Men's outdoor track and field led the way for the department with six nominees followed by women's outdoor track and field with five selections. Softball produced four all-academic team members while baseball, men's golf and women's tennis each added one to the list.
The 18 selections are five more than the nearest programs, University of Montevallo and Lee University, with 13 apiece. For the 2022-23 academic year, 42 Choctaw have earned all-academic team recognition. The total are the most by any league member.
In order to be named to the GSC All-Academic team, nominees must have a cumulative GPA of 3.20 or better their entire academic career at their institution and may not be a freshmen or first-term transfer. The student-athlete must also be a significant contributor to the team. Other factors include leadership, community service and extracurricular activities. Institutions are not allowed to vote for their own student-athletes. The number of student-athletes selected in each sport is determined by the number of positions normally involved in the playing of that sport. Ties are not broken.
Along with the all-academic team list, the conference released the academic honor roll, and for the second time this school year, Mississippi College placed over 100 student-athletes on the honor roll with 115, which ranked fourth in the league during the spring sport programs. For the academic year, 300 MC student-athletes were named to the league's academic honor roll. The total sits second among conference members as it was five behind Montevallo, which held the most.
To achieve honor roll status, a student-athlete must have a grade point average of 3.00 or better and have competed in outside competition at the time the award was announced.
