Choctaw Split Saturday Double-Dip; Drop Series at Union

JACKSON, Tenn. --- The Mississippi College baseball team split the Gulf South Conference series finale doubleheader at Union University on Saturday, March 8. The Choctaw (12-25, 7-14 GSC) evened the series with a 17-8 victory in the opening game of the day, but were edged 7-6 in the final game of the series.

MC received big efforts at the dish from JT Vance, Jordan Rollins and Caleb Reese. Vance posted a pair of multiple-hit performances as he went 4-for-10 on the day with three RBI. Rollins led the team in RBI with nine with six coming in the firsts game of the day as he went 3-for-7 at the plate. Reese joined the Miami native with a big RBI day as he drove in five, including four in the opener, as he logged a pair of hits.

Rollins and Reese also helped the Blue and Gold move up the single-season home run list as they added to the team total on the day. Rollins provided a pair of home runs while Reese supplied his second of the weekend in the opening game. MC gathered four home runs over the weekend and increased its season total to 47, which is sixth on the single-season ledger.

Gabe Garner (2-0) logged his second win of the season to help even the series. He tossed 2.2 innings in relief and allowed just two runs on two hits along with two walks and two strikeouts. Jackson Smith (2) struck out a pair and allowed two hits in his 1.1 innings in relief to record his second save of the season. The Raymond, Miss., native, however, was tagged with the loss in the second game of the day as he surrendered one run on four hits alongside a walk in just two-thirds of an inning in relief to fall to 0-3 on the campaign.

Deadlocked at 7-all through seven innings, the Choctaw outscored Union 10-1 over the final two frames to level the series with a nine-run victory. The Blue and Gold posted four runs in the top of the eighth to grab an 11-7 advantage. UU (12-22, 7-14 GSC) got a run back in the home half of the inning, but MC poured on six runs in the top of the ninth headlined by Rollins' grand slam home run, the fourth of the season for the team and the first for Rollins. Reese added a solo shot to cap the scoring.

Lane Evans (2-5) received the loss as he allowed three runs on one hit in two innings in relief.

In the second game of the day, Rollins led off the scoring with a two-run, home run. The Bulldogs and Choctaw exchanged the lead and ties over the first three innings of action, but Bryce LaRocca gave the visitors from the Magnolia State a one-run advantage after the third inning as he scooted across the dish on a Union error.

The narrow lead held until the bottom of the sixth as the Red and White rallied and tied the contest for the third time in the contest as Britt Netterville singled up the middle to score Colby Davis. Eli Snelson gave the Bulldogs in second, walk-off win of the season in the bottom of the seventh as he delivered a single with the bases loaded and one down to score Mitch Sisk.

Ryan Evans (4-3) picked up the win on the mound as he struck out one and allowed one hit in 2.1 frames in relief.

Mississippi College steps out of GSC action as it travels to Hattiesburg, Miss., on Tuesday, Apr. 11 to face William Carey. First pitch in the Hub City is set for 5 p.m.
