CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College baseball team secured its Gulf South Conference series with a 9-4 victory over Christian Brothers University on Saturday, Apr. 15. The outcome gave the Choctaw (15-26, 9-15 GSC) their seventh series win over the Red and Black and their 21st decision.
Â
The Blue and Gold registered six hits led by
Jordan Rollins with a pair of hits.
Kolby McWilliams paced the squad with four RBI and he and
Caleb Reese each collected an extra-base hit in the contest.
Â
Ervin Simmons (1-3) logged his first win of the season on the bump as he tossed 2.1 scoreless frames in relief. He held the Bucs (17-28, 6-21 GSC) to just three hits as he struck out two and gave up a walk.
Â
MC jumped out to an early advantage as he claimed a 4-0 lead through the first five innings of action. However, the Red and Black rallied to knot the contest at 4-all in the top of the seventh headlined by Matthew McDaniel's three-run double to start the scoring in the frame. Tate Gentlemen followed with an RBI-single to even the score in the visitor's half of the inning.
Â
The Choctaw responded with two runs in the home half of the seventh as
Bridley Thomas, who added to his nation-leading walk total with two more in the affair, and
Jordan Rollins applied pressure to the Bucs battery as they each swiped a bag. An errant throw to try to erase Thomas at third skipped into left field and a fielding error allowed both Choctaw to score.
Â
MC added insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth as McWilliams drove ball into right field that ricocheted off wall and allowed
JT Vance, Rollins and
Lane Willis to score and expanded the margin to the five-run deficit.
Â
Simmons and the Choctaw defense slammed the door in the contest as the Greenville, Miss., native fanned the first Buc hitter as a groundout and lineout ended any chance at a rally attempt for the visitors from the Volunteer State.
Â
McDaniel led the Red and Black at the plate as he went 4-for-5 with three RBI. Weber Denman (L, 0-2) took the loss on the mound as walked four and allowed two runs in two innings of relief.
Â
Mississippi College returns to action on Tuesday, Apr. 18 as it travels to Magnolia, Ark., for a non-conference tilt against No. 11 Southern Arkansas University. The Choctaw run-ruled the Muleriders earlier in the season in Clinton. First pitch at Walker Stadium at Goodheart Field is 3 p.m.
