CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College baseball team dropped its series finale doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 4 to conclude the weekend against the University of Arkansas at Monticello.
Â
Jordan Rollins led the team at the plate in the twinbill as the Miami, Fla., native logged a pair of extra base hits and drove in three of the Choctaw five runs, including a two-run home run in the opening game of the day.
Â
Beau Kirsch joined Rollins with two hits on the day as he collected his second, multiple-hit effort.
Â
Rollins was not alone in the home run category as
Bridley Thomas collected his first in the Blue and Gold as he blasted a solo homer to give the Choctaw their first lead of the season in the first inning of the last game of the series.
Â
MC clung to the one-run lead until Rollins plated the second run of the game with a RBI-triple in the fourth to score
Kolby McWilliams, who singled just prior to knock. The two-run advantage stood until the top of the sixth when back-to-back UAM home runs evaporated the lead and placed the visitors from the Natural State up 4-2.
Â
The Choctaw attempted a rally in the home of the frame with a Kirsch leadoff single followed by a
Wesley Sides walk, but the comeback came up short as the unit left two runners stranded following back-to-back strikeouts.
Â
Kyle Collet (1-0) tossed five, scoreless frames and allowed just two walks in the start, but saw he day close with four runs allowed on three hits with five strikeouts in the setback.
Jackson Smith pitched the final frame and struck out one along with a walk in the relief appearance.
Â
In the opener, the Boll Weevils jumped out early with nine runs in the two innings, including a seven-run, second. MC posted three runs in the bottom of the third to cut into the deficit, but the Green and White responded with three of its own in the top of the fourth to regain its nine-run margin. UAM delivered its final blow in the top of the seventh.
Â
Three Choctaw hurlers saw action in the opener as
Cooper Gadman (0-1) logged 3.2 innings of work in the start with 12 runs allowed on 13 hits with four strikeouts and two walks.
Lane Little and
Kade Linn each saw an inning-plus in relief and held the Weevils to just two hits the rest of the way. Linn allowed one run as each of the relievers recorded a strikeout in their appearance.
Â
Mississippi College returns to action on Tuesday, Feb. 7 as it travels to Miles College. First pitch against the Golden Bears is set for 3 p.m.
