Women's Hoops Rally Falls Short at Delta State

CLEVELAND, Miss. --- The Mississippi College women's basketball team gave in-state and Gulf South Conference foe, Delta State University, all it wanted, but the rally fell short as the Lady Statesmen (12-15, 11-12 GSC) completed the season sweep with a 55-45 victory on Saturday, Feb. 18 inside Walter Sillers Coliseum.

Carley Hudspeth paced a trio of Choctaw (6-20, 5-18 GSC) with double figures in the scoring column as she totaled 14 points. It's the second game with 10-plus points for the Grenada, Miss., native. Brett Gardner added 11 points in the contest followed by Karly Ivy with 10. It marks the eighth game this season for Gardner and the sixth for Ivy.

For the second consecutive outing, Mya Bobo recorded double figure rebounds as she collected 11 against the Lady Statesmen. MC totaled 24 as a team.

Mississippi College shot 33.3 percent from the field, including a 42.9 clip from behind the arc. The squad made just nine trips to the free-throw line in the 40-minute affair and walked away with just 33.3 percent.

Trailing 27-19 at the intermission, the Blue and Gold chipped away at the deficit during the third stanza as it narrowed the gap to 33-29 behind a pair of free throws from Ivy with just over two minutes left to play in the period. Dezirae King followed with a 3-pointer a minute later to pull within a point at 33-32. However, Bryanna Taylor knocked down a jumper and a free throw to extend the lead back to four points heading into the final period.

MC kept the lead close during the first seven minutes of the final 10, but Delta State extended its lead back to double digits with 3:14 left to play on a Michelle Smith layup. MC cut the lead to single digits, but couldn't overcome the deficit.

Camryn Davis paced DSU with 14 points and 11 rebounds. It shot 44.2 percent from the floor and was 8-for-13 from the charity stripe for a 61.5 clip. The Lady Statesmen pulled down 35 boards.

Mississippi College concludes the 2022-23 campaign on Wednesday, Feb. 22 as it hosts the University of West Georgia. Tip-off is at 5:30 p.m.
