Senior Day Spoiled; Wolves Win at Buzzer

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College women's basketball team was edged at the buzzer, 65-63, against the University of West Georgia on Wednesday, Feb. 22. MC closes out the season with a 6-21, 5-19 GSC record.

Four Choctaw scored in double figures led by Taylor Ben with 16 points. Danielle Tennant added a career-high 11 points with Dezirae King and Brett Gardner with 10 points each. Tennant and King tied for tops on the team with six rebounds each.

MC shot 45.3 percent from the floor, including a 33.3 clip from behind the arc, and 75.0 percent from the free-throw line The Choctaw grabbed 33 boards.

The Blue and Gold chipped away at a 13-point deficit midway through the third period to trail 50-47 heading into the final 10 minutes of action as Ben scored on a jumper in the paint as the horn sounded. The Wolves extended their lead to as many as six points, but MC responded with a King layup and a Gardner trey to narrow the lead 53-52 just under seven minutes to play.

Ben would knot the contest at 54-all with four and a half minutes left – one of three deadlocks down the stretch between the two teams. The last tie came with three ticks remaining on the clock as Gardner was fouled behind the arc by UWG's Katelyn Dunning. The Batesville, Ark., native knocked all three shots from the charity stripe to force a 63-63 stalemate.

The Red and Blue called its final timeout to advance the ball down the floor and Aliyah Washington scored on a layup to give the Wolves a 65-63 advantage with 0.3 seconds left in the game to clinch the contest and secure the season sweep. Washington finished with a team-best 16 points.
