Women's Hoops Tops Shorter

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College women's basketball team snapped a four-game skid as it defeated Shorter University, 70-55, in Gulf South Conference action on Saturday, Feb. 11 inside A.E. Wood Coliseum.
 
A quartet of Choctaw scored in double figures led by Brett Gardner with 15 points. Karly Ivy added 11 points while Carley Hudspeth and Sky Vaughn tallied 10 each. Mya Bobo paced the squad on the glass with 10 rebounds.
 
MC shot 41.4 percent from the floor, including a clip of 42.1 from behind the 3-point line, and 73.7 percent from the free-throw line. The Blue and Gold also tallied 43 rebounds.
 
After trailing 19-13 following the first 10 minutes of action, the Choctaw rallied to hold a one-point advantage at the intermission, 31-30. The Blue and Gold kept the pressure on its visitors from the Peach State as it outscored them 21-13 in the third stanza. MC grabbed its first double-digit lead with under eight minutes to play in the third as Hudspeth put back a second-chance layup.
 
SU clipped the deficit to single digits on different occasions during the final period, but the Choctaw pushed the lead back to double digits and reached their largest lead of the game at the 4:02 mark as Gardner drained a 3-pointer to push the advantage to 64-49.
 
Lindsey Hardin led SU with 13 points while Tiara Lewis had six boards. The Hawks shot 33.9 percent from the field and grabbed 33 boards.
 
Mississippi College returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 18 at conference and in-state foe, Delta State University. Tip-off is 2 p.m.
