Blazers Pull Away in Second Half to Defeat Choctaws

Valdosta, Ga. --- The Mississippi College men's basketball team was defeated by Valdosta State 69-77 this past Sunday afternoon (December 3rd) in GSC play.

The Choctaws started out red hot offensively, as they went on a 10-2 run to open the ball game, six of which from Dekyre Fuller. MC kept the advantage and even pushed the lead to their largest of the contest, at a 23-11 advantage with eight minutes to go before halftime. However, over the next six minutes, the Blazers would go on a 16-5 run to cut their deficit to only one and the two teams would enter the break with MC leading 33-32. The two teams traded baskets for their first few minutes of the final half, with VSU finally taking back the lead with 15 minutes remaining. No team held more than a four point advantage in the second half until the 3:49 mark when the Blazers led 66-61 after JC Clausi free throws. Unfortunately for the Choctaws, they were not able to muster a run to take back the lead, as they fell by eight when the final buzzer sounded.

For the first time this season, Rashad Bolden did not lead the Blue and Gold in the scoring column, as he finished with 13 points on just 3-15 shooting from the floor. Instead, it was both Fuller and Cam Brown to finish with 18 points each. Fuller shot 9-14 from the floor and grabbed five rebounds, while Brown connected three times from deep and went a perfect 7-7 from the charity stripe. The  Choctaws controlled the rebounding category 34-24, with Eric Fleming pulling down eight boards to go along with his eight points. As a whole, MC shot 41% from the field and just 5-24 from beyond the arc, just a 20% clip. Meanwhile, the Blazers were able to shoot 6-13 from deep for 46%.

The Blazers were led by Braxton Williams, who finished with 30 points on 11-15 shooting and hit two of his three shot from downtown. Valdosta State shot 25-49 from the floor for 51%, including a 62% clip in the second half.

Next for the Choctaws (3-4, 2-2 GSC) is a return to A.E. Wood Coliseum for a matchup against Montevallo on Friday, December 8th. Tipoff inside the Golden Dome is set for 7:30 p.m. CT.
