Women's Hoops Falls at Ouachita

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. --- The Mississippi College women's basketball closed out its non-conference slate on Wednesday, Nov. 15 with a 90-38 setback at Ouachita Baptist University. MC moves to 1-2 on the season while the Tigers improve to 2-0.

The victory gives the Purple and Gold its fourth straight in the series and the first on its home floor since 1997.

Taylor Ben led the Choctaws in scoring and on the glass as she totaled 10 points and pulled down five rounds. Kaylee Jones finished second on the team in scoring with eight points while a quartet of Choctaws tied for second on the squad with three boards.

MC shot 26.5 percent from the field, but despite a tough night from the floor, MC hit 81.8 percent from the free-throw line – its second-best total this season. The Blue and Gold totaled 26 rebounds in the effort.

A trio of Tigers scored in double figures paced by Laney Mears with 19 points. Grayson Fairless paced the team on the glass with seven rebounds. She added 14 points while Brooke Smith rounded out the leading scorers with 12.

OBU was 52.4 percent from the floor, including a 39.1 clip from behind the arc. It also connected on 15-for-19 from the charity stripe for 78.9 percent. The Tigers grabbed 33 boards.

The Choctaws held a slim advantage in the opening quarter, but found themselves trailing 25-11 after the first 10 minutes and down 42-18 at the intermission. The Purple and Gold kept its defensive prowess in the third as it opened the period on an 11-0 run. MC snapped the scoring run on the front end of a pair free throws from Jaliscia Florence.

Jones sparked the largest scoring run for the Blue and Gold as she knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers under the three-minute mark, but the Tigers responded and held a 40-point advantage at the end of the frame en route to the victory.

Mississippi College returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 25 as it opens Gulf South Conference action against nationally-ranked Union University. Tip-off in A.E. Wood Coliseum is 2 p.m.
