Women's Hoops Holds No. 7 Union to Season-Low Scoring Effort

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College women's basketball team fell in its Gulf South Conference opener, 84-53, to seventh-ranked Union University on Saturday, Nov. 25. MC moved to 1-3 on the season while the Bulldogs improved to 6-0.

Sky Vaughn paced the Blue and Gold in scoring and on the glass. The Pontotoc, Miss., native recorded 11 points and added six rebounds. It marked a career-high in the scoring column for the junior as she equaled her career best on the glass. Both highs were originally set against Shorter on Feb. 11, 2023.

Amelia Bell matched Vaughn on the glass with six boards while Karly Ivy added 9 points. The Blue and Gold finished the day shooting 50.0 percent from the floor, including a 45.5 clip from behind the arc. It marked a season-high shooting performance from the field for the Blue and Gold and its second-highest clip from behind 3-point line.

MC held Union to a season-low 84 points as it limited the Bulldogs to 2-for-14 from behind the arc – both season-lows for the visitors from the Volunteer State. UU averaged 13.5 3-pointers as it entered the game.

"I could not be happier with how this team continued to work hard and get better through the course of this game. I am not happy with the loss, but we finally followed a game plan and I was happy with that. We held a team that shoots 37 3-pointers and makes half to below half its average," said head coach Greg Long. "There were a lot of positives to take away from this and us to continue to improve. Now we have to build from this and get better for a gritty Christian Brothers."

Brooke Hampel led the Bulldogs with 20 points. Emma Kallas added 12 points while Macey Lee supplied 11. Hampel grabbed six rebounds to lead the team. UU connected on 51.7 percent from the floor and hit a game-high 71.4 percent from the free-throw line.

The Choctaws held a lead early in the first quarter, but found itself down by 10 points after the first 10 minutes. Union expanded its lead as it outscored the Blue and Gold 32-15 in the second period en route to a 56-29 advantage at the break.

MC limited the Bulldogs to three points midway through the third stanza and it went on an 8-2 run to pull the deficit to within 22 points and trailed by the same mark at the end of the period. However, the Red and White responded in the final 10 minutes as it outscored MC 16-7.

Mississippi College returns to action on Monday, Nov. 27 as it hosts Christian Brothers University. Tip-off is at 5:30 p.m.
