Volleyball Sweeps Lee in Straight Sets

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College volleyball team posted its second Gulf South Conference sweep of the season as it topped Lee University on Friday, Oct. 6 inside A.E. Wood Coliseum. The decision extends the Choctaws (6-8, 5-2 GSC) win streak to three straight and four of the last five outings.

The outcome marks the fifth straight against the Flames (11-8, 3-4 GSC) in the series and the fourth consecutive in the Coliseum. The sweep is the third of its kind during the series win streak.

Lydia Paulette, Caroline Chastang and Ali Wiggins paced the squad offensively. Paulette led the team with 16 kills followed by Chastang with 13. Wiggins directed the offensive attack with 22 assists. It is the 12th contest this season in double figures for Paulette and the 36th of her career while Chastang recorded her 10th of her sophomore campaign and career 27th. The Bay Minette, Ala., product also added five service aces to her ledger to match her career best set against West Florida earlier this season.

Wiggins garnered her eighth match with 20-plus assists this season and the 11th of her career. Caylin Pixley joined the Enterprise, Ala., native in double digits as she dished out 11 dimes.

Defensively, Chastang and Missy Beber collected double figure digs as Chastang notched a team-best 14 while Beber had 11 on the night. Julia Sumrall recorded a pair of blocks as five different Choctaw picked up a rejection. Sumrall also added four kills alongside fellow Magnolia State product Mary Grace Foster.

After jumping out to a 2-0 lead in a pair of close sets to open the match, the Choctaw flexed their muscle in the final frame. MC claimed a 9-3 advantage behind a 5-0 run that included three consecutive kills from Paulette sandwiched between a kill from Rhaia Davey, which started the run, and a service ace from Pixley.

The Blue and Gold took a 10-point advantage, 22-12, as Paulette delivered her sixth kill of the frame. The Flames attempted a rally as they pulled within 24-19, but Chastang connected off a pass from Pixley for her fourth winner of the set to ice the contest, 25-19.

Abby Stroh led LU with eight kills while Ashton Middleton added 13 assists.

Mississippi College returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 7 as it hosts Shorter University in its annual Mental Health Awareness Match. First serve is at 2 p.m.
