Choctaws Extend Win Streak; Sweep Shorter

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College volleyball team logged its third Gulf South Conference sweep of the season as it topped Shorter University on Saturday, Oct. 7. The victory is the fourth straight in the series and the third consecutive sweep of the Hawks.

MC (7-8, 6-2 GSC) has won nine consecutive sets and 12 of its last 14.

Lydia Paulette led the Choctaw with 14 kills while Caroline Chastang added 10 in the contest. It is the 13th time this season Paulette has registered double figure kills. It is the 11th of the campaign for Chastang.

Ali Wiggins paced the squad with 17 assists while Caylin Pixley supplied 14 to finished second on the team. The setter duo also led the team with two service aces apiece, which led the team.

On the defensive side, Missy Beber collected 11 digs to lead the team while Rhaia Davey added a pair of blocks alongside of five kills in her first collegiate start of the season. The Baton Rouge, La., native's kill total matches a season-high set at Auburn Montgomery earlier this week.

MC jumped on the Hawks in the opening set and never looked back as it claimed a 25-15 win. The Choctaw posted a .467 attack clip in the frame as it rushed out to a 14-3 advantage. Six different players provided points during the run as it came in various ways. The Blue and Gold reached its largest lead of the set, 20-8, as Paulette notched a kill. The Tuscaloosa, Ala., product tallied seven kills during the game.

In the second, SU raced out to an advantage as it claimed a 7-3 lead. MC rallied to tie the contest at nine-all off a service ace from Wiggins. Chastang followed with a kill from Wiggins and three straight Hawk mistakes extended the margin to 13-9. MC built upon the miscues and reached set point on a Beber ace. The Blue and White delayed the set ender with a block, but Davey closed the set on the ensuing serve off an assist from Wiggins.

Like the first frame, the Choctaws amassed an early lead and never let Shorter back into the contest as it claimed a 25-18 victory.

Mary Beth Long and Caroline Silvills led the Hawks with six kills each while Amelia Thro supplied eight assists.

The Choctaw posted a .272 attack percentage in the match while the defense held the Hawks to a .033 – the second lowest clip by an opponent this season.
