CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College volleyball team knocked off 12th-ranked University of West Florida in five sets on Saturday, Sept. 24 as it snapped the Argonauts 51-match, Gulf South Conference win streak. MC improved to 13-1 and 4-1 in the conference. UWF falls to 11-4 and 3-1 in the league.

The Blue and Green's last conference loss came on Sept. 11, 2018 in four sets to the University of Alabama in Huntsville.

Caroline Chastang and
Lydia Paulette paced the squad offensively with 15 and 14 kills respectively. It is the third straight match in double figure kills for Chastang and the fourth in five outings. It is also the fourth in five contests in double figures for Paulette. The duo of
Lexie Laurendine and
Ali Wiggins assisted in the direction of the offensive effort. Laurendine dished out a team-best 24 dimes while Wiggins added 12 assists.

MC totaled 14 blocks in the match led by
Julia Sumrall with eight rejections, including five solo blocks. Six Choctaw registered a block in the match.
Missy Beber paced the team with 11 digs.

The Navy and Gold opened the day with a 25-12 victory in the opening set, but found itself trailing 2-1 through three sets and facing its second conference setback of the season. However, MC was not to be outdone in front of its home crowd as it battled through five deadlocks and two lead changes to clinch the fourth set, 25-19, and extend the match to a deciding fifth set – the third of the season. The team is 3-0 in five setters this season.

The Choctaw jumped out early as they claimed the first three points of the fifth, including back-to-back kills
Kendall Platt and Paulette. Paulette, native of Tuscaloosa, Ala., extended the margin to 5-1 on a service ace, one of a team-leading five on the day. MC never trailed in the set despite UWF pulling within a point down the stretch – the last coming at 9-8. The Navy and Gold closed out the set on a 6-4 run.

MC totaled a .285 hitting clip – the fifth best this season and the best in conference play.

UWF joins a list of Texas Woman's University, Belmont Abbey College, Florida Institute of Technology, Rollins College and Southern Arkansas University as the program's first-ever wins.

Mississippi College steps out of conference play on Friday, Sept. 30 as it travels to Jackson, Tenn., to face Lane College. First serve is set for 6 p.m. The Choctaw return to conference action on Saturday, Oct. 1 as it faces Union University for the second time this season in the Volunteer State. The match is set for 2 p.m.
