CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College volleyball team picked up its second straight Gulf South Conference win as it downed Auburn University at Montgomery in four sets on Friday, Sept. 23 inside A.E. Wood Coliseum. MC improved to 12-1 on the season and 3-1 in the conference.
Â
The victory is the sixth in the series and fourth straight over the Yellowhammer State institution.
Â
Kendall Platt and
Caroline Chastang paced the squad with double figure kills in the contest. Platt totaled 12 kills while the reigning GSC Freshman of the Week added 10.
Lexie Laurendine dished out a team-best 23 assists as
Ali Wiggins supplied 12 dimes.
Â
Sloane FitzHenry provided resistance at the net with six total blocks, including three solos. The effort matches a career-high for the Houston, Texas, native as she recorded six at West Georgia on Oct. 19, 2021. Platt joined in on the defensive side with a team-best 13 digs.
Â
The contest proved one of the toughest of the season for the Navy and Gold. The four setter totaled seven ties and four lead changes throughout with none coming in the opening set. MC registered the first three points of the opener and never looked en route to a 25-20 victory.
Â
In the second, the Choctaw again jumped out to an early margin, but witnessed the Orange and Black stage a rally and tie the contest at 9-all and take its first lead on the next point. AUM held the lead until Platt tied the contest at 19-up on a service ace, one of her team-best six on the night. The two teams exchanged ties and leads down the stretch with MC tying the contest at 24-all on a Warhawk miscue. However, Ylenia De Mango scored the next two points coming on a kill and ace to clinch the set, 26-24.
Â
MC responded following the intermission as it jumped on the opposition early in the third set. Back-to-back aces from
Missy Beber doubled up the score on the Warhawks and a kill from
Lydia Paulette gave the Navy and Gold its largest lead of the set en route to a 25-18 win.
Â
The Choctaw jumped out to an early lead in the fourth as well, but saw its conference foe battle back and cut the deficit to within two points down the stretch, but AUM could not overcome the early hole as a Kendall McCain service error ended the contest.
Â
Mississippi College turns its attention to nationally ranked University of West Florida on Saturday, Sept. 24. Free donuts for MC students into the Coliseum with valid ID while supplies last. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
