CLEVELAND, Tenn.--- The Mississippi College men's soccer team took down nationally ranked Lee University (#14 ranked) on Friday evening (Sept. 16th). MC won the match 4-2 behind a two goal effort from
Noah Wagner, plus goals from
Zach Diallo and
Felix Ewald. MC improves to 4-2 (1-2 GSC) on the year, while Lee falls to 4-1-1 (2-1 GSC).
MC scored the opening goal in the 14th minute to get ahead early.
Sergio Garrido found Wagner who had gotten past the Lee backline and Wagner was able to slot it past the keeper to put MC ahead 1-0.
Lee would equalize though in the 32nd minute on a fierce strike from Eemeli Makela from just outside of the box. That goal would even things at one, which is where the score would remain for the rest of the 1st half.
In the 1st half, Lee outshot MC 5-3 and held a 4-2 edge in shots on goal.
A big moment in the match came in the middle of the first half as well. MC's starting goalkeeper
Cole Turner had to replaced in the 20th minute after going down. He was replaced by
Carlos Viquez who was tasked with playing the final 70 minutes in net off the bench.
Lee would take the lead in the 59th minute on a goal from Fabian Navarro. Navarro received a nice ball from Mattia Balzano and then was able to flick the ball over Viquez and into the net to give Lee the 2-1 lead.
The lead would be shortlived however.
Guilherme Santos was able to draw a penalty kick for MC in the 63rd minute. Diallo stepped up and put it home to to draw the Choctaws back even. The goal is Diallo's second of the season.
MC would draw another penalty kick in the 70th minute. Ewald drew it and converted it himself this time around to give the Choctaws a 3-2 lead. The goal marks Ewald's third of the season.
Then came arguably the biggest moment in the match for MC and Viquez in goal. Lee drew a penalty kick in the 71st minute, but Viquez was able to make the save to keep MC ahead 3-2.
Wagner then scored the dagger for MC in the 89th minute. He beat Lee's keeper to the ball outside the box, dribbled around him, and was then able to tap the ball into the empty net to put the match away at 4-2. The brace now gives Wagner four goals on the season.
Overall for the match, the Choctaws outshot Lee 15-13. Lee held an 8-5 edge in shots on goal.
Next up, the Choctaws will stay on the road to take on Shorter University on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 18th).
