Choctaws Defeat Shorter 3-1

ROME, Ga.--- The Mississippi College men's soccer team defeated Shorter University 3-1 on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 18). Noah Wagner, Jayce Dotson, and Olaf Conforti scored the goals for MC. The Choctaws improved to 5-2 (2-2 GSC) on the year, while Shorter falls to 3-4 (0-4 GSC). The win is MC's second in a row, while the loss marked the Hawks' fourth straight defeat.

Wagner got the match started quickly for MC in the 5th minute with a goal. He received the ball at the edge of the box as he spun around a defender, and then dribbled into the box. He was then able to beat the keeper to put MC up 1-0 early. The goal marked Wagner's 5th of the season.

The Choctaws then picked up a big goal right before the halftime break. Zach Diallo played the ball in to Dotson in the 43rd minute, who put the ball in the net to double MC's lead to 2-0. That scoreline would remain until the end of the 1st half. The goal marks Dotson's 2nd of the season

In the first half, MC outshot Shorter 9-1 and held a 5-0 edge in shots on goal.

Shorter got a goal back however early in the 2nd half. Vicente Matta scored for the Hawks in the 48th minute to trim the Choctaw lead to 2-1.

Conforti scored the dagger for MC though in the 75th minute. The ball squirted loose after a collision in the box, and Conforti put it in the back of the net to extend the Choctaws lead to the ultimately final score of 3-1.

Overall, MC had a commanding edge in shots and were the more threatening team. MC outshot Shorter 25-2, and held a 16-1 edge in shots on goal. Shorter's goalkeeper, Javy Flores, did a quality job of keeping the Hawks in the match with several big saves.

Wagner led the way for MC in shots with six, Diallo also added five. Jakob Gaarde also added three shots, with all three being on goal.

Next up, the Choctaws will return home to host Alabama-Huntsville (Friday, Sept. 23rd) and West Alabama (Sunday, Sept. 25th).
