CLINTON, Miss.---The Mississippi College men's soccer team knocked off Alabama-Huntsville 2-1 on Friday afternoon (Sept. 23rd) in an intense battle.
Guilherme Santos and
Noah Wagner scored the goals for MC. The Choctaws improved to 6-2 (3-2 GSC) on the season, while UAH fell to 0-7-1 (0-4 GSC).
Guilherme Santos put MC ahead early in the 14th minute.
Jakob Gaarde played the ball into the box. It took a deflection off the head of a Charger defender, and Santos got his head on it to put it home to give MC the lead. The goal marks Santos' first of the season.
UAH would equalize though in the 19th minute as they converted a penalty kick. The Chargers drew a foul in the box, and Sander Van Der Sluijs stepped up to put it home to draw the Chargers even.
That 1-1 score would remain for the rest of the first half.
In the opening 45, MC outshot UAH 11-7 and held a 5-3 edge in shots on goal.
A huge moment in the match came in the 62nd minute. Andreas Tsimon received a red card for UAH, meaning that the Chargers had to finish the remainder of the match with just ten men.
Noah Wagner would get the match-winner for MC in the 80th minute. Nico Milot played the ball into the box, and it took several deflections before Wagner got on the end of it and headed it home to put MC ahead for good. The goal marks Wagner's sixth of the season, which leads the team.
Overall for the match, the Choctaws outshot the Chargers 17-8. MC held a 7-4 edge in shots on goal.
