Choctaws Battle to Hard Fought 1-1 Draw With West Alabama

CLINTON, Miss.--- The Mississippi College men's soccer team drew with West Alabama 1-1 on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 25th). Jorge Areces scored the 2nd half equalizer for MC to force the draw. The Choctaws now sit at 6-2-1 (3-2-1 GSC) on the year, while West Alabama moves to 2-2-4 (2-0-3 GSC).

The Tigers struck first in the 24th minute off the leg of Baronyi Kengeye on a rebound. UWA took a shot from the right side that was saved, but it fell to Kengey who slotted it home for the Tigers.

That 1-0 score would remain for the rest of the first half.

In the opening 45, MC outshot UWA 5-4. The Tigers had the advantage in shots on target however, 3-2.

The Choctaws picked up the momentum early in the second half, and had the run of play early on.

Then came the equalizer for MC in the 67th minute. Jorge Areces spun around a defender, after receiving the ball in from George Riley, and shot past the keeper to draw the Choctaws even. The goal is the first of the season for Areces.

Even with each side pushing for the match winner, the score would remain even at 1-1 for the remainder of the match.

Overall for the match, MC outshot West Alabama 11-10. Both teams were even with five shots on goal.

Soane Folituu led the way for MC with three shots in the match.

Choctaw goalkeeper Santiago Dominguez also made four saves in his debut appearance in net for MC.

Next up, the Choctaws will take on Delta State in two weeks on October 9th in Cleveland, Miss.
