Lady Choctaws Complete Sweep Over Delta State In GSC Winning Series

CLEVELAND, Miss.  -- The Mississippi College Lady Choctaws softball team claimed the weekend series sweep over the Delta State Lady Statesmen on Saturday, winning game's two and three by final scores of 12-10 and 8-7.

The Lady Choctaws got on the board first with an AnneMaire Peavy double to right field that scored Jordan LaFosse to give MC the 1-0 lead in the second inning. 

Tied at 1-1 in the third, MC utilized two singles by McCall Lee and Jenna Ergle to regain a two-run lead, 3-1. DSU put up a five run spot in the bottom half of the third inning, taking control of the scoreboard as DSU went ahead 6-3. 

In the fifth inning of the game, two more runs came across the plate for MC on a Jordan LaFosse single to centerfield that brought the DSU lead back to within one-run for the Lady Choctaws.  

Peavy gave the Lady Choctaws the lead with a two-run double to left field that score Kamryn Eaton and LaFosse as MC took the 7-6 lead. Delta State answered in the bottom of the sixth inning, putting three runs on the board as DSU took the 9-7 lead heading into the final inning. 

Trailing by two-runs, AnneMarie Peavy once again delivered, this time with a three-run home run to give MC the 10-9 lead. Delta State tallied a run in the bottom half of the seventh inning, forcing extras in a tight game two. 

Mississippi College continued their success for the weekend, producing two runs in the eighth inning on a fielders choice and sacrifice fly to centerfield as MC took control 12-10.

Delta State went three up three down in the final frame, as the Lady Choctaws held on for the thrilling win in game two of the weekend series as MC took care of business by winning the GSC series.

Five Choctaw batters finished with multiple hits, including Peavy and Ergle with three hits a piece. Lee, LaFosse, and Rayne Minor each tallied two hits in game two's win. Peavy led MC with six runs batted in, including the three-run home run in the seventh inning. 

In game two, it was the power hitting of Jenna Ergle. that helped lift the Lady Choctaws to am 8-7 win over the Lady Statesmen. Trailing 5-2 in the fifth inning of game three on Saturday, Ergle sent a three-run shot over the right field wall to tie the game up at 5-5.

Delta State regained a one-run lead in the bottom of thee fifth, taking the 6-5 advantage over MC. The very next inning, Brooke Fagan answered the call with a sacrifice fly to center field that scored the tying run for MC. The very next at bat, Ergle once again sent a moonshot home run over the right field wall, scoring Rayne Minor as MC took a 8-6 lead on Ergle's second home run of the day.

Delta State produced two runs in the sixth inning, but the Lady Choctaws shut down the Lady Statesmen offensive attack in the seventh inning, winning game two by a final of 8-7, picking up the weekend sweep. 

Ergle, Baile Avants, and LaFosse each collected two hits a piece in the game, with Ergle leading MC with two home runs, including a team best five runs batted in. 

Avery Barnett (10-7) picked up the win, going 3.2 innings pitched, allowing just three earned runs on the day with six hits given up. MC out hit Delta State in game two, finishing with 11 hits as a team.

MC improved to 17-17 overall on the season and 9-12 in Gulf South Conference play after this weekend's three game sweep over Delta State. The Lady Choctaws return to action on Tuesday, April 12, at home versus Southern Arkansas. The two teams will go head to head for a doubleheader nonconference matchup beginning at 3 p.m. at the MC Softball Complex in Clinton, Miss.
