Baseball Drops Series at UAH

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. --- The Mississippi College baseball team dropped its doubleheader on Saturday, April 2 at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. MC falls to 12-22 and 6-12 in Gulf South Conference play. UAH improved to 15-19 and 8-9 inside the league

UAH posted the game-winning run in the next to last inning in all three contests of the weekend series. It's the second time this season the Choctaws have been swept this season – both coming in GSC action – with the last coming at Auburn University of Montgomery.

Caleb Reese and Markarius Lee paced the Navy and Gold at the dish as both posted a pair of hits in each game of the day. Reese drove in a pair in the first game.

In the opening game of the twinbill, the two teams stood deadlocked until the bottom of the eighth when Austin Reed shot a single into center field to plate Will Noles to regain the lead for the Blue and White and eventually secure the victory and the series. Ken Scott delivered a solo home run in the top of the frame to force the 4-all tie for the Choctaws.

MC trailed early in the contest, but Caleb Reese forced the first stalemate in the top of the third with a two-run home run that scored Jackson Breedlove. UAH snatched the lead back in the bottom of the third and expanded its margin to two runs in the bottom of the sixth as Jeff Hunter scored on a ground out.

Tristan Tigrett pulled the Navy and Gold to within a run in the top of the seventh as he blasted an-RBI triple off the top of the wall in right center that plated Markarius Lee prior to Scott's solo home run in the top of the next half inning.

Joseph Cuomo (2-5) received the loss with 5.2 innings in relief. He allowed two unearned runs on six hits alongside a walk and strikeout. David Dunn tossed 2.1 frames in the start and three runs – two earned – on seven hits.

In game two of the series, the two teams stood deadlocked at a run each until the Chargers posted a three spot in the bottom of the sixth of the scheduled seven-inning affair. The Choctaws picked up their only run of the game in the top of the fourth as Lee scored on a wild pitch to knot the ballgame.

Carson Villalta delivered a solo home run to start the sixth for the Blue and White and break the standoff. Austin Reed followed with a two-run single up the middle to add insurance runs and claim the three-run victory to sweep the series.

Gavin LeBlanc (1-1) took the loss on the mound as he allowed two runs on four hits through five frames. He also walked four and struck out three. The Morse, La., native allowed three hits in the first two innings and didn't allow a hit until the next three frames until the Villalta home run in the sixth.

Cooper Gadman tossed the final frame in relief with two runs allowed on four hits.

Mississippi College returns to action on Saturday, March 9 as it travels to GSC and in-state foe, Delta State University, for the first two games of a three-game series. First pitch in Cleveland, Miss., is 1 p.m.
