Baseball Drops 13-7 Decision at Arkansas-Monticello

MONTICELLO, Ark. --- The Mississippi College baseball team fell 13-7 at the University of Arkansas at Monticello on Monday, March 21. MC moved to 10-16 on the season while the Boll Weevils improved to 10-13.

The Navy and Gold totaled four hits on the day along with five walks. Ken Scott posted a multiple-RBI performance for the Choctaws as he drove in four runs – all coming from his grand slam in the seventh inning. The four-RBI day is his second of the season and one of just three on the team.

Payton Russell (1-1) was tagged with the loss on the bump as he allowed two runs on three hits along with three walks. He also struck out a pair in the four-inning start. MC sent five total hurlers to the mound in the midweek affair.

After three scoreless innings, the Choctaws broke deadlock with a run in the top of the fourth as Cody Crifasi singled down the left field line to score Caleb Reese, but the Boll Weevils responded with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the frame to take a 2-1 lead. The two runs sparked an 8-0 run by the Green and White as UAM it held an 8-1 lead through six innings.

The Choctaws jumped back into the scoring column in the top of the seventh with seven runs, headlined by Scott's grand slam. The home run marked the fourth of the season for the Meridian, Miss., native and first grand slam since Dylan Duplechain's against Christian Brothers on April 11, 2021. Lane Willis and Reese also drove in runs during the inning.

After the Navy and Gold pulled within a run in the visiting half of the seventh, UAM responded with five runs in the bottom of the frame to expand its lead to 13-7. Cade Thompson added a home run of his own during the inning as he collected a three-run shot.

Five Weevils posted multi-hit outings led by Thompson and Chase Cripps with three hits each. Thompson was also one of two hitters with three RBI on the day as he was joined by Reece Reading. Charles Peacock (3-1) tossed five innings in the start and picked up the win. He allowed just one run on two hits and fanned seven.

Mississippi College returns to action on Saturday, March 26 as it hosts 21st-ranked Valdosta State University in the first two of a three-game series. First pitch for Saturday's twinbill is set for 2 p.m.
