Choctaws Split Thursday Doubleheader With Nationally Ranked West Florida

CLINTON, Miss. — The Mississippi College Lady Choctaws softball team took on No. 13 ranked West Florida on Thursday afternoon, splitting a pair of games, as MC won game one by final score of 2-1 before dropping game two, 2-1.

Mississippi College scored two runs on a total of four hits in game one, and were led by Alexis Laughlin with two hits in two at bats. Neither team scored a run through the first five innings of the game one, yet in the six inning West Florida took a 1-0 lead on a single to left field, breaking the scoreless tie.

Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the sixth inning, with runners at first and second, Jaycee Dill reached on an error by the short stop which allowed Jordan Lafosse and Jenna Ergle to score as an Mississippi College took a 2-1 lead heading into the seventh-inning.

Avery Barnett went on to shut out west Florida in the seventh-inning picking up the win after going 1.2 innings pitched giving up only one hit and for strikeouts. Mississippi College went on to win game one by a final score of 2-1.

Ergle and AnneMarie Peavy each collected one hit in the contest along with Laughlin's two hits to lead MC. In game two, Mississippi College struck first in the first inning after Brooke Fagan scored on a Jordan Lafosse sacrifice for a centerfield giving Mississippi College the 1-0 lead early.

West Florida answered and third inning after a sacrifice fly to centerfield tied the ball game up at 1-1. In the sixth inning, West Florida took a one run lead after a Vasquez double to centerfield scored West Florida's Boggs, as the Argos gained the lead heading into the final inning. West Florida went on to win game two by a  final score of 2-1 as the Argos and Choctaws split Thursday's doubleheader in Clinton, Miss.

Mississippi College had five hits in game two and were led by Jenna Ergle with two hits in the contest. Brooke Fagan had one hit and the teams only runs scored, while McCall Lee and Kamryn Eaton each had one hit a piece.

Mississippi College finished Thursday with an overall record of 12-10 after the doubleheader split. Mississippi College returns to action this weekend versus Lee with a doubleheader scheduled for Saturday at 2 and 4 p.m. before capping the series on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the MC Softball Complex.
