CLINTON, Miss.--- The Mississippi College baseball team swept a double-header over Christian Brothers on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 26th to win the GSC series over the Buccaneers. MC took game one 7-3 before winning game two 8-6. The Choctaws improve to 5-9 (3-3 Gulf South Conference), while CBU falls to 3-7 (1-2 GSC)
In the first game, it was a stellar outing from starting pitcher
Jackson Bridges (2-0) that gave MC what it needed to get the win. Bridges went 7 innings on the mound, allowing one earned run on five hits and three walks. He also struck out seven batters. After pitching through traffic and giving up a run in the first inning, Bridges cruised after that.
After trailing in the first, MC would quickly even it up as
Markarius Lee scored on a passed ball. MC would then take the lead for good in the third inning as
Tristan Tigrett drove in
Ken Scott and
Lance Wade with a 2-RBI single.Â
Lee would continue to contribute as he would extend MC's lead to 4-1 in the sixth as he drove home
Cody Crifasi on a sacrifice squeeze bunt play.Â
Christian Brothers would get a run back in the top of the eighth to cut the lead to 4-2, but Lee once again came through as he hit his second home run in as many games. This time it was a three run homer in the bottom of the eighth to extend MC's lead to 7-2.
CBU scored in the top of the ninth on a sacrifice fly, but MC would pick up the 7-3 win.
Brandon Gardner picked up his second save of the season in the game.
In a 7-inning game two, a big MC comeback thwarted a red-hot CBU start. Christian Brothers jumped out to a quick early lead as they scored two runs in the 1st and three runs in the 2nd to quickly take a 5-0 lead.Â
The Choctaws would chip away at the lead as
Jon Michael Cader drove in Crifasi on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the 2nd and then Crifasi singled in Wade in the 3rd to trim the lead to 5-2. CBU would tack another run on in the top of the 4th to push their lead back to 6-2.
Then came the big inning as MC scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 7-6 lead.
In that fourth inning, Wade was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score
Jackson Breedlove. Then Scott and Tigrett walked with the bases still loaded to score Cader and
Matthew Priest respectively to trim the lead to one. Crifasi got the big go-ahead 2-RBI single as he drove in Scott and Wade to put MC ahead 7-6.Â
Cader would tack on an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth as he singled in Lee to make it 8-6.
On the mound in game two,
David Dunn (1-2) picked up the win in relief as he came in and threw 4 1/3 innings, allowing just one unearned run on two hits. He also struck out four batters.
Wade came in from left field to get the save on the mound, picking up his first of the season.
On the series, MC was led by Crifasi and Lee at the plate. Both players went 5 for 11 at the plate on the weekend. Lee added five Runs Batted In, four runs scored, two home runs, and a double. Crifasi added three RBI and two runs scored.
Next up, the Choctaws will host #4 Southern Arkansas in midweek action on Tuesday, March 1st. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 pm.Â
