BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- Mississippi College nearly swept the Gulf South Conference Indoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week honors presented by TicketSmarter, as announced by the conference office on Wednesday, Feb. 2.
The Choctaws claimed all three men's spots with
Cole Benoit,
Al Ferrill and
Christian Balcer.
Jazmin Hernandez and
Tytavia Hardy claimed two of the women's spots.
Four of the quintet helped reset the school record books during the University of South Carolina Invitational headlined by Hernandez and Benoit with a pair of records. The Georgetown, Texas, native, who garnered GSC Track Athlete of the Week, posted a time of 4:53.75 in the women's mile, which ranks 20th in the nation. She assisted in the distance medley relay as the foursome posted a time of 11:55.71, the sixth best time in Division II.
Benoit brought home men's track athlete of the week laurels. He posted the eighth-best time in the country in the 3,000 meters as he clocked a time of 8:07.67. He added to record-breaking day as a member of the DMR, which posted the third fastest time in the nation and 15th all-time in DII, with a 9:47.93.
Ferrill, the men's top male field performer, broke the program's record in the men's shot put as he placed second in Columbia, S.C., with a distance of 16.06 meters. He finished fourth in the weight throw with a toss of 16.58 meters.
Hardy claimed the GSC's Top Female Field Athlete as she posted the 12th best distance in the nation with a leap of 12.07 meters in the triple jump. She set the 60-meter hurdles mark with a time of 8.66, which ranks ninth in the country.
Balcer adds his second conference freshman of the week accolade to his belt. He posted a time of 4:10.96 in the men's mile, which is 47th nationally and won the 5,000 meters invite section as he clocked a 14:33.38.
Mississippi College returns to action on Friday, Feb. 11 as it travels to Allendale, Mich., for the Grand Valley State University Big Meet. The two-day event concludes on Saturday, Feb. 12.
