Baseball Splits Saturday Twinbill; Rubber Match Sunday at Noon

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. --- The Mississippi College baseball team split a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 12 at 26th-ranked Young Harris College. MC (2-4) claimed the opening game of the series as it held off the Mountain Lions, 6-5. YHC (4-1) rallied in the night cap to claim a 4-1 victory.
 
The two teams decide the series on Sunday, Feb. 13 with a Noon Central first pitch from Zell B. Miller Field.
 
The Choctaws used a four-run, fourth inning to help it snap its two-game slide this season. Leading 1-0 through three frames, Ken Scott delivered a bases-clearing, double to expand the margin to 5-0. John Rice scored earlier in the inning. The Mountain Lions plated their first run the bottom of the fifth and added three more in the seventh to pull within 5-4.
 
MC added an insurance run in the eighth as Woogie Lee delivered one-out, single and used three wild pitches to scoot across the base path and become deciding run. The Purple and White attempted a rally, but managed just one run in the bottom of the ninth as the Choctaws worked around leadoff error.
 
Joseph Cuomo (1-1) picked up the win on the mound as he allowed just three hits during 6.2 innings along with four runs – three earned. He walked one an struck out four in the victory. Brandon Gardner (1) picked up the save with a run allowed and a strikeout in 2.1 innings.
 
Chad Brown (0-1) took the loss on the bump as he surrendered four runs – three earned - on six hits in just 3.1 innings. He gave up three walks and struck out three.
 
In the second game of the twinbill, the Navy and Gold grabbed the early lead as it pushed its only run across the dish in the second inning as Tristan Tigrett scored on a YHC error. The advantage held until the bottom of the third as Noah Fitzgerald drove in Logan Worley with a single. Worley reached on an error to lead-off the inning.
 
The Purple and White broke the deadlock in the bottom of the sixth as it scored three runs. Jackson Kemp and Brandon Jolliff each recorded RBI hits to help capture the victory.
 
Nate Lamb (1-0) grabbed the win on the bump. He tossed 6.0 frames and allowed just the one unearned run on four hits while striking out six and allowing three free passes.
 
Austin Huggins (0-1) was saddled with the setback as he allowed three runs – two earned – on three hits in 5.0 innings of work. He fanned four and walked just a pair.
